Sailing Immersion ⛵️
The Sailing Classroom offers engaging environmental education programs aboard a historic sailboat on the Hudson River. Tailored for grades 4-12 but also adaptable for adult groups, the core experience involves hands-on activities like fishing, sail setting, and water quality testing. Participants rotate through interactive stations covering navigation, Hudson Valley history and ecology, and marine life observation.

For adult audiences, a more flexible format allows guests to explore rotating stations at their own pace throughout the charter. Experienced educators facilitate "big group talks" providing in-depth background on the Hudson River estuary, the boat's history connected to Pete Seeger and the Clearwater organization, and the interconnections between environmental topics.

The Sailing Classroom aims to foster environmental stewardship through placed-based, multi-sensory learning. Activities draw out themes like sustainability, human impacts, and scientific inquiry. Participants emerge with increased environmental literacy and appreciation for their local waterways. Programs cultivate both cognitive understanding and emotional connections to motivate conservation.

Whether for youth field trips or adult groups, the Sailing Classroom delivers immersive environmental education while gliding peacefully on a historic sailboat. The unique setting creates indelible memories and new perspectives on the living Hudson River.

The teachers in your school are feeling unsupported and share your disciplinary approaches are ineffective. Your in-school suspension room is preferred by students rather than a deterrent. Learning From the Future: Moving from What Is to What If. (Part 1 of 2)
So often in education, when we talk about potential reforms or changes, we look to the past for answers. Where is the research? What does the data tell us? What has or has not worked? While there is certainly value in understanding what came before, what gets lost when we only focus on incrementally improving someone else’s 150-year-old dream for education? How might visiting the future we want to emerge inspire experiments that breathe new creativity, shared vision, and joy into our teachers, students, districts, and communities?

Participants will learn from and with one another as we explore the boundaries we place around school and work collaboratively to design the future of teaching and learning.
Participants will think critically and creatively about the role of the modern school leader and what is needed to enact real change inside a school and district.
Participants will receive World Savvy frameworks and resources that can be used inside their school community.

This session is inquiry-based, and participants will engage in multiple interactive activities that incorporate collaboration, movement, critical and creative thinking, and art.

Activities:
Our Changing World: Participants will explore data and think critically about what it means to prepare young people to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
The Power of Metaphors: Participants will work in small groups to explore various images and use them as a metaphor for the kind of education system they hope to see.
Exploring Boundaries: Working in small groups, participants will identify the boundaries we place around school. We will then discuss what possibilities open up when we expand or contract those boundaries.
Archeologists of the Future: Participants will imagine traveling 20 years into the future. There they see an inclusive education system that adequately prepares young people to thrive in a complex, interconnected, and ever-changing world. What do they notice? What does teaching and learning look like? They then have to choose an artifact from the future to bring back to the present that will exemplify how education has transformed. They will work as a team to design their artifact and share it out to the group.
Questions and Reflections: Participants will share their ideas and discuss and plan for what comes next.

Phenomenon Based Learning Rocks! (Part 1 of 2)
By the Finnish definition Phenomenon Based Learning refers to project-based learning where students tackle phenomena and/or solve problems that feel relevant and authentic to them. During the learning process students practice, acquire and use a variety of skills as they dig into the phenomenon from the viewpoints that intrigue them. As a cohort of learners, they share their findings along the way, build a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon and ultimately share the results with an authentic audience that benefits from their findings or solutions. As a result of a PhenBL process the school might have a new recycling system in place or the local health center might have a well-designed and informative pamphlet with guidelines for healthy living. All of that doesn’t happen without a cohort of teacher aligning curricula and designing the base of the learning process that leaves room for student choice and voice.

The goal of this session is for the participants to walk away with:
- thorough understanding of the essential criteria of PhenBL
- ideas of what PhelBL looks and feels like in practice
- feeling of empowerment as a result of collaboration and exchange of ideas with other participants

“Be the change you wish to see in the world!” To be future leaders, advocates, and engaged community members, students must first connect to the world outside of the classroom. Engage in hands on activities and best teaching practices that demonstrate how sustainability provides an integrating context for content and foundational literacy skills.

Enhance your literacy toolbox to support the diverse readers in the classroom with strategies and skills grounded in current research on reading, heart, humanity, and technology. Ponder the question, why do U.S. teachers lag behind global peers in teaching about sustainability? We will use articles, podcasts, and talks to identify why, and gather materials to weave sustainability topics across content areas. Your digital reading toolbox will be filled with curricular resources across a wide range of sustainability-based topics. This course is for K-12 leaders across content areas who want to see how sustainability can be integrated into all we do in the schools, while cultivating critical thinkers, digital citizens, knowledge constructors, and literacy learners.

The Data Driven Student: Cultivating Reflective, Evaluative Learners (Part 1 of 2)
Data plays a crucial role in guiding educational outcomes. How might leaders and educators empower and equip students to use data as the drivers of their learning journey? Enabling students to examine their own data can significantly transform learning environments. This approach helps students become self-directed learners who develop a better understanding of their performance, take responsibility for their learning, and feel a greater sense of ownership over their success. Drawing on research from Hattie, Vygotsky, Bandura, and Eccles, among others, participants will develop a framework to cultivate data-driven students who are reflective learners who measure their growth and track their progress along their educational journeys.

But wait, there's more! We'll dive deep into the ethical quagmires and authenticity conundrums in our AI-infused world. This is a journey through technology's looking glass, where every click could be a clue and every post holds a piece of the puzzle. The audience will debate and determine “Bot or Not”. The audience is the ultimate judge and jury, but their work will not be as easy as you think and may leave us all questioning our ability to determine right/wrong or authentic/.

So, grab your thinking caps and join us for a session of laughter, learning, and a little bit of existential dread. Who knows? You might just leave with a newfound appreciation for your own human ingenuity... or start giving side-eye to your smartphone.

Ditch Donut Fridays: A Science-Based Approach to Wellbeing in Schools: Maria Sommer & Martín Blank Den Talk 🏕
Description: What do Donut Fridays, Massage Day, and Days off all have in common? They are shortcuts to “wellbeing” that seldom create lasting change. In this workshop, participants will learn evidence-based strategies and tools to promote wellbeing and build resilience in schools and districts. We will explore how to assess the needs and strengths of your district, develop a comprehensive wellbeing plan, and implement strategies to support the wellbeing of students and staff.
