Learning From the Future: Moving from What Is to What If. (Part 2 of 2)

So often in education, when we talk about potential reforms or changes, we look to the past for answers. Where is the research? What does the data tell us? What has or has not worked? While there is certainly value in understanding what came before, what gets lost when we only focus on incrementally improving someone else’s 150-year-old dream for education? How might visiting the future we want to emerge inspire experiments that breathe new creativity, shared vision, and joy into our teachers, students, districts, and communities?

Participants will learn from and with one another as we explore the boundaries we place around school and work collaboratively to design the future of teaching and learning.
Participants will think critically and creatively about the role of the modern school leader and what is needed to enact real change inside a school and district.
Participants will receive World Savvy frameworks and resources that can be used inside their school community.

This session is inquiry-based, and participants will engage in multiple interactive activities that incorporate collaboration, movement, critical and creative thinking, and art.

Activities:
Our Changing World: Participants will explore data and think critically about what it means to prepare young people to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
The Power of Metaphors: Participants will work in small groups to explore various images and use them as a metaphor for the kind of education system they hope to see.
Exploring Boundaries: Working in small groups, participants will identify the boundaries we place around school. We will then discuss what possibilities open up when we expand or contract those boundaries.
Archeologists of the Future: Participants will imagine traveling 20 years into the future. There they see an inclusive education system that adequately prepares young people to thrive in a complex, interconnected, and ever-changing world. What do they notice? What does teaching and learning look like? They then have to choose an artifact from the future to bring back to the present that will exemplify how education has transformed. They will work as a team to design their artifact and share it out to the group.
Questions and Reflections: Participants will share their ideas and discuss and plan for what comes next.
